It is important to start planning to ensure that your tutorial meets a high level of clarity. Identify specific learning objectives for your tutorial before you begin creating it. To ensure the success of your tutorial, you should write out the objectives and make sure they define the actions or concepts that users need to understand on the tutorials page for them to succeed. You do not have to have a set number of objectives for your tutorial. However, it is usually best to keep it at a reasonable number and remember that, in many cases, less is more.
Make sure to leave your audience with enough objectives. It is important to have one or two objectives in a short tutorial. If you reach five or more objectives, ensure they are all true. Many of the elements covered tutorials page in a video are not necessarily learning objectives, so it is important to review your objectives and determine if they are indeed objectives. Your tutorial needs to be presented in the order in which a viewer can use the information to be successful. The best thing you can do when there is no set order is to group similar concepts or processes.
If a few steps are normally performed in conjunction, they should be taught sequentially. Setting up your tutorial in this way makes it easy to understand how different features or steps relate to or even depend upon each other. If you normally read a sentence as though it led right into the next, the video may need more time to show the action than if you read it as if it led right into the next sentence. This makes for awkward pauses or the need to rush the video.
If you pause between each sentence, step, and sub-step, you’ll find it easier to add time to your narration when editing the video. Listen to your video when you have finished a draft or even a portion of it. Please take a moment to listen to each part and consider whether it feels natural to you.
